Saltoun House Sundials Restoration

Situated between the villages of Pencaitland and East Saltoun lay the historic Saltoun Hall, a 12th century tower and castle, two traditional clock dials along with a sun dial and an astrological dial.  The dials, which are located on the turret at the hall, were in abeyance for several years before James Ritchie Clockmakers restored them and brought them back to working order. Following the removal of the four dials from the East Lothian location, they were transported to the Smith of Derby Group’s base in the midlands for the process to begin. The Old Joe Clocktower

The University of Birmingham boasts the tallest free-standing clock tower in the world at the heart of its campus, commonly known as ‘Old Joe’ or ‘Big Joe’. In 2017 Old Joe fell silent as the Smith of Derby Group carried out repairs to the strike side of the clock so the famous chimes could be heard across campus once again.   The tower has also had other practical purposes over the last 113 years, since it was built in 1905 when the four JB Joyce clock dials were first commisioned. Cancer Research Visit Smith of Derby

The Derbyshire community is at the heart of everything we do here at Smith of Derby. This may be working with local charities, getting involved in local projects or working with the University. As part of this we recently welcomed 20 members from the Derby committee of Cancer Research UK. Cancer Research UK is a charity close to the heart of many people.
