Edinburgh's Balmoral Hotel Clock running to time again - three minutes fast

"The clock is important to the people of Edinburgh and such an iconic landmark, it is vital to have it running exactly to the Hotel's specifications." - Alan Wilson Head Clockmaker of James Ritchie & Son

Travellers rushing to catch their train from Waverley station in Edinburgh can rest easy knowing that the Balmoral Hotel Clock is running consistently three minutes fast again after Clockmakers James Richie & Son installed a new mechanism to ensure it runs to time.

For years the clock has run fast to help people get to the station in time, but had recently begun losing time as the sprocket and chain mechanism aged.

James Ritchie & Son, part of Smith of Derby Group, fitted a new electronic clock mechanism which will ensure the clock runs smoothly.

But that’s not the last the company will see of the clock’s insides this year – our experts will be back in over the Christmas period to rewind the clock by three minutes for Edinburgh’s huge Hogmanay celebrations on December 31st.

Alan Wilson, Managing Director of James Ritchie & Son, said: “It is vital for the Hotel to have the clock running three minutes fast all year round – except Hogmanay, otherwise Edinburgh will be bringing in the New Year a little too early!

“The clock had been electrified some years ago but the mechanism was getting old and the chain stretching, which meant they were losing time.

“Every six months or so we were having to go in and tighten it up and reset the time, but it made more sense in the end to replace the mechanism.

“The clock is so important to the people of Edinburgh and such an iconic landmark, it is vital to have it running exactly to the Hotel’s specifications.”
