Shanghai Custom House Tower Clock

The clock and the clock tower are the most famous features of Shanghai’s Customs House.

The clock tower offers views over the entire Bund and Shanghai city centre. It has four faces, each made up of more than 100 pieces of glass. The diameter of each is 5.3 metres, each with 72 automatic lamps. The clock and bell mechanisms are built according to the design of London’s Big Ben.

The entire mechanism was built by JB Joyce & Co. – part of the Smith of Derby family of companies – and was shipped to Shanghai in 1927.

To this day it remains the largest clock in Asia.
