Harmony Tower Clock

Smith of Derby has been commissioned to create a traditionally weight-driven clock with world’s largest ever dials for the city of Ganzhou, South East China.

The Harmony Clock Tower will feature an unprecedented 12.8 metre diameter dial on each of its four faces and will be driven by a unique mechanical movement. An innovative third hand charts the Chinese lunar chapters.

Smith of Derby, which boasts a rich heritage in clock making dating back to 1856, will produce one of its iconic Whitehurst timepieces for the prestigious project. The design will break new ground in terms of size, accuracy and aesthetics when it is unveiled at the end of June.

The clock integrates the latest world-class technology, utilising the most energy efficient long lasting materials available today, such as stainless steel faces, carbon fibre hands and toughened steel gears. It will be automatically wound, with a bell striking hourly and to mark sunrise. The final design incorporates the messages that ‘Time is Fair to Everybody’ and ‘Everyone should Treasure Time’ which were taken directly from the Mayor of Ganzhou’s public announcement of the project.

Smith of Derby was selected by the Ganzhou Expressway Company following a trade mission to China and briefings to city leadership. It was tasked with creating ‘the world’s most exquisite traditional clock’ which will become the centrepiece of a new business, residential and recreational park.

World-leading clock manufacturer, Smith of Derby, has developed and donated one of its creative timepieces for a Professor Stephen Hawking-inspired show garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

The clock will be incorporated into the garden entitled ‘The Motor Neurone Disease Garden – A Brief History of Time’ which is inspired by Professor Hawking’s iconic book which investigates the origins of black holes.

Designed by East Midlands-based Sue Hayward – a previous Gold Medal and BBC Peoples’ Choice Award winner at the show – the theme of the garden is ‘the progression of time’. Sue Hayward selected Smith of Derby to design and produce the clock for its unrivalled understanding of this concept, boasting a rich heritage in timekeeping dating back to 1856.

Smith of Derby Managing Director, Bob Betts said: “The garden Sue has designed reflects the passage of time through the evolution of plants. Across all our work, Smith of Derby seeks to create an expression of time, so there is clearly natural synergy between ourselves and this fabulous garden.

Our ancient clock is set into a semi-circular dry-stone wall and indicates time passing swiftly for those living with motor neurone disease. Water falls into a dark spiralling water feature representing a Black Hole in time and space, the origin of which Professor Hawking spent years researching.”

Apprentice Week

In ‘Apprentice Week’ our own Richard Cox took a fair share of the national media spotlight with a number of radio and other media broadcasts.

Richard is in the second year of his four year apprenticeship and thoroughly enjoys the work as no two days are the same. He is frequently ‘out on the road’ with our team of engineers looking after the 4,500 clocks in our care.

Richard studied mechanical engineering at Loughborough University and was attracted by the broad spectrum of our apprentice scheme; delivered by our in-house team of experienced clockmakers who have over 300 years experience between them!

New clock at Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium

Those who know their football will be aware that the clock at Arsenal’s old Highbury ground was one of the great iconic images of its time; we are proud to still maintain the upkeep of the clock in its current position on the outside of the Emirates Stadium. We also built a half-size replica of the original clock and this sits proudly in the stadium’s ‘Diamond Club’.

Students at work experience week

Throughout the 20th century this practice gradually disappeared and many companies lost the concept of continuous learning.

At Smith of Derby, we firmly believe in coming into contact with people who refresh us as well as the positive feeling we get from supporting others. As part of this way of life we have the pleasure of working with young people from a variety of backgrounds. Our school ‘Work Experience’ Week is something we all look forward to and at a final presentation on a project ‘the measurement of time’ (in front of University Professors and Senior Management) the students themselves vote on who managing director Bob Betts should ‘hire’ – it’s great fun!

Additionally we work with groups of Undergraduate Design Students (Nottingham Trent University and Loughborough University) on specific projects and how people share public spaces.

Our school and university students give us a welcome and important reminder of how others see the world. It allows us to avoid being introspective and, in turn, we firmly believe that time with us gives the students confidence to express their ideas.

The clock takes its inspiration from the fact that every DNA is unique and this incredible design has its own very distinctive identity. At 7 metres high it has a DNA like appearance that delivers time with incredible accuracy and, for many, will be viewed as a work of art.

From the first meeting with Smith of Derby it was clear that they had the creative vision to interpret our brief and deliver an exciting and innovative design for this state of the art research faculty; however we were also impressed with their track record of technical and engineering excellence. At every stage of the project they have delivered everything that we’ve needed – on time and on budget. We couldn’t have asked for more.

The DNA Clock has a spiral centrepiece that rotates at one revolution per hour. The glass beads on the twelve horizontal bands light up as each hour is passed. Midday or midnight is signified as the top band lights up

We relished the opportunity to work with the university on such an important project. We always work very closely with our clients to produce a design that blends perfectly with the location, structure and theme of the building it is an integral part of. The decoration of the Royal Wedding Celebration Clock

The Rose depicted is a Sweet Briar, a lovely old fashioned wild pink Rose. It represents Catherine as an English rose, emerging from the marriage of the sweethearts as a Princess. The sweet briar is beautifully scented.

The Shell is a central emblem of the coat-of-arms of Prince William.

Wheat explores the fertility and fruitfulness of the joining together and a sheath of wheat is the traditional symbol for weddings. It also symbolises plenty, a wish for the future prosperity of the country. A ribbon and bow ties the knot.

On the cameo is the monogram - intertwined C and W, with crown above.

Town Clock keeps up with the chimes

The residents of the market town of Darlington, Co Durham, rely on hearing the time chiming on the historic ‘Covered Market Clock’ in the centre of town and were lost when it went wrong. They are delighted that it is now chiming again after undergoing repair work by Smith of Derby.

The clock, donated to the town by Joseph Pease, was made by Cooke of York and dates from 1864; although Cooke made many turret clocks, this particular drive train style and design is only one of four ever made.

The ‘Expression of Time’ outlined the history of Smith of Derby and culminated with design details of the magnificent Harmony Tower; the world’s largest mechanical clock currently under construction in Ganzhou, China.

The St Roche Lecture is one of the key dates in the horology calendar. This annual event is made possible through the generous support of Mrs. Josie Roland who funds the lecture, and provides a two year St Roche scholarship for a student studying on the Clocks programme at West Dean College.

Nick Clegg visits Smith of Derby

New Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg praised ‘the best of industrial innovation’ during a high profile visit to world-leading clock manufacturer Smith of Derby and hailed the company’s latest creation as ‘the mother of all clocks’ as time ticked by in the build up to the general election.

Amidst a wave of pre-election excitement and media frenzy, the Derby-based firm, which boasts a rich heritage in clock making dating back to 1856, hosted the Liberal Democrat leader for the start of the final countdown, the day after the third televised debate.

The only Derby firm visited by the Lib-Dem ‘Battle Bus’, Smith of Derby’s staff welcomed Nick Clegg and showcased their prestigious global projects - including the world’s largest traditional clock - which is currently being produced for the Harmony Tower in Ganzhou, China.

Branded by Mr Clegg as the ‘Mother of all Clocks’, this groundbreaking project is set to put Smith of Derby firmly on the global time map. In addition to the clock itself, the innovative and creative firm has played a fundamental role in the development of a celebratory Time Gallery housed within the tower and a Time Park - from the centre of which, the Harmony Tower Clock will form an iconic focal point for the city.

Palm Galleria, Cairo

The prestigious new shopping destination in Cairo, Palm Galleria, will feature a spectacular Smith of Derby Sail Clock as its centrepiece when it opens at the end of 2011.
As the building itself is sail shaped it followed that the main themes of navigation and technology should be incorporated into the creative process and be evident in the final design.
Architect John Burrows, Director of BCIdesign, who has had responsibility for the interior of Palm Galleria takes up the story “We set Smith of Derby a tough brief; to create an iconic clock that incorporated ideas of time, light, air and modernity as a homage to the craft of sailing and timekeeping. The result is our Sail Clock overlooking the main central court.

The clock is made up of two sails 5.2m & 3m high which are fabricated from stainless steel sections. Then 3D curved glass panels with the time of the day etched on them are clamped between the curved stainless steel cladding panels. The top sail has the hours etched into the glass panels and the minutes appear in the bottom sail. Two separate hands (armatures) move through the hours and minutes and each hand has a light at the end of the armature and shines out the time of day.  At the end of each hour, the minute hand rewinds back to the beginning, resets itself and starts the curve one more time. It’s a perfect and fitting signature for our Palm Galleria!”

Limited edition clock launched

Smith of Derby is producing 40 of the special clocks and will unveil the model at the INDEX Exhibition at the World trade Centre in Dubai from 22-25 October 2011. Come and see this exquisite clock in Hall 4 at Stand C181.

The 150 year old company is the world leader in exquisite timepieces that adorn the world's greatest residences, palaces and mosques and is no stranger to working in the Middle East. Time marches on again

Time travels

Established in 1856, Smith of Derby appeared in the first issue of Derbyshire Life and Countryside. Today, while it still keeps many of the country’s older clocks in action, it has also become a byword around the world for quality engineering and innovative design. Pat Ashworth visited the Derby works……

The Queen of Tonga has one and so does a Mosque in Oman. When John Smith set up his business in 1856, he could never have foreseen that his work would span the Empire and spread right across the globe. You can tell the time on a Smith of Derby clock in Barra, Burma, Barbados, Bolivia; in Cape Town and Chicago; on St Paul’s Cathedral and the new St Pancras International Railway Station; on Derby Cathedral and in most exquisite form on the University’s campus.

Eighty years ago, John Smith & Sons (Smith of Derby) advertised in the first issue of ‘Derby Life and Countryside’. The world has changed out of all recognition since then and timekeeping has kept pace with change. Much of it has evolved from the conservation side of the company’s work.

And now we’re exporting to China; we decided we had to follow where the cranes are, where people are building. So we packed our bags and visited the Far East, the Middle East and India. We started working on opportunities and talking to clients. Where people need timepieces, perhaps to “meet the clock” or “under the clock”, we have a lovely story to tell.

We found, amongst a people who love the concept of time, resurgence and regeneration of traditional clock work. The Chinese are building towers for theme parks, and Smith of Derby won the contract to design and deliver for Harmony Tower in Ganzhou, what will become the world’s largest mechanical clock – two –and- a half times the size of Big Ben. We were also engaged to design and build another 15 pieces, which will tell the story of timekeeping from its earliest inception – a ‘Time Gallery’.

China has a passion for the mechanical clock and for traditional craftsmanship and where Smith of Derby is really competitive is in the area of high design. In the last two years, we have taken on to our staff people skilled in computer-aided and 3-D design. Our Company is involved with over 400 years of technology. But it is the way we approach it today, the exquisiteness, the decoration, the design. Looking after such a diverse range of technology is unique. This makes our engineering department very unusual… from mechanical or the latest GPS controlled technology, to solar or wind power or our newly developed luxury Whitehurst range….a grandfather clock in 2010 high design, clear and stunning in crystal glass and gold, with a silvered face and jewelled movement. Cardiff landmark to be restored

A landmark clock which has been a feature in Cardiff city centre for over a century is to be restored.

An H Samuel clock has hung above Cardiff Market in St Mary Street since 1910, but the latest model, installed by Smith of Derby in 1963, has not worked for years.

As it is much loved landmark, Cardiff Council has announced it will spend £25,000 on repairing and restoring the clock.

The clock has been removed by Smith of Derby and will be completely renovated and the signage will be changed to read 'Cardiff Market' as part of the wider plans to improve the appearance of St Mary Street and High Street and make the area better for pedestrians.

From the world's largest to the smallest.....

The British clockmaking company behind the world’s largest mechanical clock has now created the smallest, to celebrate the 40^th Anniversary of the UAE.

Smith of Derby, world renowned clockmaker, has produced a limited edition gift clock using the same design more normally found on original turret clocks of the 17^th and 18^th century, and more frequently used on clock towers or in stately homes.

The National Day Celebration Clock was on show for the first time at the Index Exhibition between October 22^nd– 25^th, where Smith of Derby exhibited it along with their luxury Islamic Prayer Clock and other clocks.

The UAE celebrates its 40^th Anniversary on December 2^nd 2011, with a range of high profile events planned. This year also marks 40 years of Smith of Derby working in the region designing and installing public clocks, tower clocks, turret clocks and luxury clocks.

The company commissioned the leading engraver David Whyman, whose clients include The British Royal family, the Sultan of Brunei and the Sultan of Oman, to engrave the crystal dial of the clock. The clock, which stands at 42cm, also features a hand engraved crystal glass cameo of the UAE Falcon.

Run by Smith of Derby’s renowned Whitehurst movement in gold plate, the clock can be personalised to include a family crest at the client’s request.

Buyers will receive an official certificate of provenance and ownership for their clock.. All clocks come with three years’ parts and labour warranty.

With a 12.8 metre diameter dial, and a Whitehurst mechanical clock movement 3metres in length, the Harmony Clock Tower, in Ganzhou, China, is officially the world’s largest pendulum-regulated clock, whilst this National Day Celebration Clock works with the same clockmaking engineering, albeit scaled down.

Kevin Litchfield, Smith of Derby’s Head of Design, said: “Having created the world’s largest traditional mechanical clock, it’s fantastic for us to use our traditional clockmaking skills to create a beautiful clock which can sit comfortably on a mantelpiece.

“We were delighted to collaborate with David Whyman to carry out the engraving on the clock – it gives the clock that added air of exclusivity.”

The National Day Celebration Clock adds to the Whitehurst brand, named after Derby clockmaker John Whitehurst, which can already be found in 33 royal and country estates, including clients such as Catherine the Great, the Empress of Russia and King George III.

Radio 5 Live Interview

Victoria Derbyshire invited Bob to take part in her BBC Radio 5 Live programme (the BBC’s home of LIVE news and sport) on Tuesday 4^th January. Victoria and Bob chatted away over the phone LIVE on the programme; the slot was to report on the success of British manufacturing which, in 2010, reportedly, has had the best performance for 16 years! Victoria was amazed to hear about a company, which made “those massive GORGEOUS clocks!!"

Bob explained that Smith of Derby was still family owned, with Nicholas Smith as President and our history, through acquisition, went back 300years. "We have around 68 employees and are currently looking for a Sales Engineer and Maintenance Engineers to cover the South of the UK and had just taken on another Planner. The company has had the best 6 months for a while; we've looked to where the cranes were with a few towers going up, luxury hotels and shopping malls, particularly in China and the Middle East. The last quarter of 2010 has been spectacular for the company with holidays having to be cancelled and mad overtime worked. It has been a crazy end to the year with goods leaving for China just before Christmas, being delayed due to the backlog at Heathrow. These have now landed in Beijing and Shanghai as we speak and 4 of our engineers are leaving shortly to install the goods. It all bodes very well for the future!"

Launch gets Royal 'Approval'!

A British clock maker has launched the world’s most exclusive Islamic Prayer Clock at the INTERIORS UAE Exhibition.

Representatives from Smith of Derby were visited by his Royal Highness, Sheikh Doctor Hazza Bin Sultan al Nahyan, a member of the Abu Dhabi royal family.

The Sheikh, nephew of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, ruler of Abu Dhabi, spent several minutes at the stand, and commented on the “fabulous” design of the high end, groundbreaking timepiece, which retails at £20,000 (DH121,000).

The luxury clock has been created by the family-owned business, which has been working in the Middle East for 40 years, as a combination of art and a celebration of faith.

It has integrated city and daily specific prayer time with classic design, and has been designed as a focal point for the interiors of mosques and other prestigious buildings, as well as "homes of distinction".

Bob Betts, Managing Director of Smith of Derby, said: “Luxury developments and prestigious existing sites have no opportunity to celebrate their faith through exploring prayer time in a luxury manner.

We have designed and created what is believed to be the world’s highest design and quality grand prayer clock that inspires and touches your senses and says: 'Do you dare to be different?’.”

He said the company, which began making clocks in 1856, was honoured to have been visited by the Sheikh on the opening day of the exhibition today (Monday), adding: “He had heard about the clock and wanted to see it. We spent a few minutes talking about the clock and its development. He said the design was ‘fabulous’.”

On the first day of the exhibition, the Smith of Derby stand proved hugely popular, with Mr Betts saying that dozens of people had come along to see what they described as “the famous prayer clock” after it featured in The National, Abu Dhabi’s leading English speaking newspaper. Potter clock at London station

A classic projecting clock that appeared in the Harry Potter films, now sits in Smith of Derby’s factory waiting for refurbishment.

The clock is over two metres in diameter, and like many others of this style of clock, was used as the standard clock by railway companies in Victorian times.

Andrew is a Year 10 pupil at Derby's Landau Forte College and he joined Smith of Derby for a week's Work Experience. As the week progressed, Andrew learnt how Smith of Derby 'ticks'! His remit was then to research and produce a concept for an unusual, thought-provoking clock - which he did admirably. Our Design Team is now working on turning his concept into a full design brief. Glockenspiel Clock 'Reborn'

As part of the redevelopment of the Swiss Centre in Leicester Square, London, the developer, McAleer & Rushe, was required as part of their Planning Approval to re-instate the Glockenspiel clock structure; McAleer Rushe invited clock manufacturing companies from around the world to tender to further develop the design and to execute the manufacture and installation of the new Glockenspiel structure. Smith of Derby, a clock manufacturing company with over 150 years of clockmaking experience, was successful in winning the contract.

Smith of Derby worked closely with McAleer Rushe working in collaboration with Swiss Tourism, Westminster City Council and their architectural consultants, Jestico + Whiles, and developed an innovative design which received full Planning Approval in July 2010.

The application sought permission for the construction of a new structure to support a Swiss Glockenspiel clock .The new structure aims to reinforce and enhance the visual link between Piccadilly Circus and Leicester Square.

The original Glockenspiel was a gift by the people of the Confederation of Switzerland and the Principality of Lichtenstein, to the City of Westminster in 1985, to mark the Quarter Centenary of the City's foundation. It was located on the corner of the former Swiss Centre building, facing into Leicester Square. It was designed as a relevant attraction and an integral part of the building facade.

The new design includes a procession of 11 moving Swiss figures against a traditional Swiss alpine backdrop, images of the 26 Swiss cantons, 27 bells, 4 figures representing bell ringers and 2 clocks.

The installation programme will begin on October 3^rd and will continue throughout the month with an intended completion date of Friday 28^th October. An official inauguration ceremony is planned for 28^th November. More news to follow!

Designer in the making?

Every year, Smith of Derby hosts pupils from local schools around the city for their Work Experience week. This intensive week's 'work' can involve up to six students but this year we only had time to accommodate one student; Andrew Chesterman, a student from Landau Forte College, joined us and was tasked with designing a 'thought provoking' clock. Andrew has a passion for Greek mythology and came up with this design (also see News item 'Bonds beyond time' - a poem written by Andrew).

Cronos or Kronos (Ancient Greek: Κρόνος, Krónos) was the leader and the youngest of the first generation of Titans, divine descendants of Gaia, the earth, and Uranus, the sky. He overthrew his father, Uranus, and ruled during the mythological Golden Age, until he was overthrown by his own sons, Zeus, Hades, and Poseidon, and imprisoned in Tartarus.

Cronus was usually depicted with a sickle or scythe, which was also the weapon he used to castrate and depose Uranus, his father. In Athens, on the twelfth day of the Attic month of Hekatombaion, a festival called Kronia was held in honor of Cronus to celebrate the harvest, suggesting that, as a result of his association with the virtuous Golden Age, Cronus continued to preside as a patron of harvest.

Dubai 'the hotel show'

Smith of Derby welcomes and encourages visits from young students. We work with local schools each year for their Work Experience week and also run a design competition with both Nottingham Trent and Loughborough University Design Students.

A recent visit from Derby College Engineering Students prompted this article as featured in DERBY college 'in touch' staff and students' magazine......

LOCAL EMPLOYER SMITH OF DERBY LTD - who have 'clocked up' an impressive 150 years in the business - took time out recently to reveal the secrets of their success to Derby College engineering students.

The students were shown around by Bob Betts, Managing Director of Smith of Derby Ltd. He explained the intricate and innovative technology and engineering that goes behind making timepieces, and talked about some of the work that the company had been commissioned to do.

Bob said, "We find the input from young minds refreshing and sometimes quite inspirational. We are very pleased to be invovled with the DEBP (Derbyshire Education and Business Partnership) and the initiative for work-related learning. We hope our encouragement may inspire these young people who are the engineers and designers of our future".

Central Council of Church Bell Ringers

Bell ringing is a team activity that stimulates the brain and helps keep you fit and…it also makes a gloriouis sound!

Many consider ringing to be their contribution to church life; others do it for the pure pleasure and the company it brings. Ringers come from all walks of life and range in age from ten to those in their eighties.

"When I'm ringing I forget all the tensions and frustrations of the day. Even better: I couldn't wish for a nicer group of friends!"

For the second year running Smith of Derby has been the major sponsor of the annual meeting of the Central Council of Church Bell Ringers, held this year in Hereford. The Council is made up of around 200 representatives of some 60-plus Ringing Associations throughout the UK and overseas. The conference, on the Spring Bank Holiday Monday, was preceded by a Gala Dinner on the previous evening at which the Council welcomed Smith of Derby’s representative Clockmaker Engineer, Matthew Smith and his partner, Julie Bunker. Matthew and Julie were inspired choices as they are themselves bell ringers in the Aylesbury area.

Many churches contain tower clocks as well as bells, the bells often being used for a clock chime as well as for full-circle ringing. Ringers are often the first point of contact for any maintenance work on the clock and bells and Smith of Derby is delighted to promote their name to those who might need to call on clock expertise.

Landmark to return to St Mary St.

An historic city centre landmark is set to return to St Mary Street in Cardiff on Tuesday October 11, 2011 after being restored to its former glory by world-famous clockmakers, Smith of Derby.

A clock has been in position over Cardiff Market as early as 1910, but the existing clock was installed in 1963 when Smith of Derby, created a new large projecting clock for H Samuel, with opal acrylic dials, rear illumination and neon lettering in the top and bottom sign panels.

Having fallen into disrepair, the distinctive clock above Cardiff market has undergone an eight week restoration at the workshops of Smith of Derby and renamed the ‘Cardiff Market’ clock (Welsh on one side and English on the other).

The clock will be officially unveiled at 4:00 pm on Tuesday October 11, continuing the presence of a clock in a position over the market for more than 100 years.

Councillor Nigel Howells, Executive member for Sport, Leisure and Culture, who will be unveiling the clock, said: “The clock outside the market was looking very tired and run down and I am really pleased at the restoration work. The Cardiff Market Clock is a much loved historical landmark and the restored clock is really going to complement the spectacular re-paving work on St Mary Street and High Street. I am greatly looking forward to unveiling the restored clock and seeing it fully working again”.

As part of its work to transform St Mary Street and High Street, creating a pedestrian-friendly area, Cardiff Council has spent £25,000 towards fully repairing and restoring the clock, ensuring that a piece of Cardiff's history is preserved for future generations. Councillor Mark Stephens, Executive member for Finance and Service Delivery, added: "This Council is commited to Cardiff having a city centre that it can be proud of. The restoration of the Cardiff Market Clock is another piece of the jigsaw in creating a pedestrian-friendly environment for High Street and St Mary Street."

Alan Griffiths, chairman of the Cardiff Market Traders' Association, said: "It's great to see the council working to promote Cardiff Market. This landmark will be seen both ends of St Mary Street and High Street and will help display where the Market is to the public for great produce, good service and friendly faces."

As Britain’s economic revival stutters and Europe’s and America’s problems worsen, it could be time for George Osborne to rethink his deficit cuts.

Chancellor George Osborne may need new medicine to heal an ailing Britain

The uneasy mood on Britain’s high streets adds momentum to calls for the Chancellor to ease the pain of tax rises and public sector cuts. The economy may have emerged from recession more than a year ago, but you could be forgiven for not having noticed the recovery. Some in the sector are increasingly concerned about the global picture and say it is high time the Chancellor again turned on the public spending taps.

For the past 156 years, Smith of Derby has made and serviced clocks adorning hotels, sports stadiums and even St Paul’s Cathedral. Bob Betts, the company’s Managing Director, realised last year that the cancellation of the Building Schools for the Future programme, local government cuts and a tight NHS budget would hardly be good for business.

So he fought hard to win new export deals. Aided by the weak pound, 30% of his sales came from overseas last year, thanks to a string of contracts in China.

“Now the latest news I read from China is they are worried their bubble is going to burst,” he said. “That all adds to the general malaise out there. I certainly am more concerned than I was six months ago. I would love to take people on in our marketing team and our design team, but I’m holding off. There is this general sense of ‘When are we going to get out of this?’ — the problem is, we just don’t know. Now, if the Government started to inject rather than take away, I think you would see people would have more confidence to invest. I simply do not think the measures the Chancellor has put in place are working. What is his plan C, let alone his plan B? It is cut, cut, cut and at the moment it feels like death by a thousand cuts.”

Betts may be worried about China, but there are also concerns about the ongoing fiscal mess in the weak eurozone economies.

Chester Eastgate Clock

Chester's world famous Eastgate clock, made and installed in 1897 by Whitchurch clockmakers, J B Joyce & Co (now part of the Smith of Derby Group) is to be overhauled. The work will be undertaken in August when the street will be closed to facilitate inspection of the bridge and the fitting of new illumination for the clock.

Smith of Derby engineers will be removing the four dial cover glasses for cleaning, removing the hands and carrying out a full strip and clean of the four sets of dialworks.

The clock is the second most photographed clock behind 'Big Ben' and it features on postcards sent by visitors to Chester to relatives and friends around the world.

BBC Radio 4 included a special feature on Derby’s economy on Sunday 6^th November on the ‘World this Weekend’ programme.

The piece in the programme included interviews with local business leaders on how Derby’s economy might show the way to growth.

Presenter Shaun Levy visited clockmakers, Smith of Derby, and interviewed Bob Betts, Managing Director of the world renowned Derby clockmaking company and Chairman of Marketing Derby.

Bob’s message was that it is great news that Derby has secured the £40m Regional Development Funding. Young people need to know that such a great engineering and high tech industry is on their doorstep. Whitehall has a huge responsibility to support the regions, not just the large businesses but the SME’s around the network to support the eco system, the whole infrastructure of development, training and longevity. The skills are there and if we lose them we will never get them back……

A 'First' for a British Firm

Potter Clock at London Station

A classic projecting clock that appeared in the Harry Potter films, now sits in Smith of Derby’s factory waiting for refurbishment.

The clock is over two metres in diameter, and like many others of this style of clock, was used as the standard clock by railway companies in Victorian times.

100 'Objects of Desire'

The world's most exclusive Islamic Prayer Clock, recently launched by the British clockmaker Smith of Derby, has been included in the prestigious publication 'Objects of Desire'.

The book, produced by Commercial Interior Design and featuring 100 luxury and inspirational products and items, was unveiled this week at a glitzy ceremony at the Ayyam Gallery, Al Quoz, Dubai.

Bob Betts, Smith of Derby Managing Director, said he was 'thrilled' at its inclusion, adding "To make it into such a high-end publication so soon after the clock's launch is a testimony to the work, research and design that the team at Smith of Derby has put into the timepiece.

It is great to see our Prayer Clock sitting next to the most elaborate chandelier in the world, made by Faustig, which hangs in the Grand Sheikh Zayed Mosque Abu Dhabi."

The coffee-table book's launch event was attended by more than 150 industry experts from the world of architecture and interior design.

Jenny Eagle, Editor of Commercial Interior Design, said the prayer clock was selected because it was "unique" and desirable to people in the UAE.

Swiss Glockenspiel returns

One of London’s best-loved landmarks has been returned to Leicester Square, reviving a sight and sound that has given pleasure to millions of Londoners and visitors. The Glockenspiel that rang out from the corner of the Swiss Centre has been returned as a redesigned free-standing unit and will be formally inaugurated on 28 November.

The original Glockenspiel – consisting of 27 bells, an astronomical clock and a procession of 23 farmers herding their cows to Alpine pasture – was given to the City of Westminster on its 400th anniversary in 1985 by Switzerland and Liechtenstein as a token of centuries of friendship. Redevelopment of the Swiss Centre from 2008 entailed its removal, but it was a condition of planning approval that the Glockenspiel should return to the square.

The historic world-leading clockmaking company, Smith of Derby, was asked by the developer, McAleer & Rushe, and Switzerland Tourism, to design and create the clock from a basic concept. The brief required it to retain a strong Swiss identity and harmonise with the surrounding buildings and urban context.

The Glockenspiel will be formally inaugurated at 12.30pm on Monday 28 November by Councillor Susie Burbridge, the Right Worshipful the Lord Mayor of Westminster, HE Mr Anton Thalmann, Ambassador of Switzerland to the UK, and Mr Urs Eberhard, Executive Vice President of Switzerland Tourism. A past President of the Swiss Confederation, Mr Adolf Ogi, is honouring the occasion with his presence.

The ceremony will include a demonstration of the way that the Glockenspiel has been designed so that it can be played live by plugging in a keyboard. Six Alphorn players will be placed on various roofs around Leicester Square, some hidden so that people in Leicester Square will wonder where the sound is coming from. At street level traditional bell-playing folklore groups from various parts of Switzerland will parade towards the Glockenspiel and create a circle around the guests. The Glockenspiel will give solo performances and in unison with the bell-ringers.

Speeches of welcome will be made by the Lord Mayor of Westminster, the Swiss Ambassador, Mr Adolf Ogi and Urs Eberhard of Switzerland Tourism.

Chris McKay, MBHI, reviews the book ‘The Smiths of Derby A Journey Through Time’ (author Maxwell Craven) for the 'British Horological Journal', January 2012 edition, ‘Book Reviews’….

‘Anyone who undertakes heavy turret clock work is likely to have encountered a Smith of Derby flatbed movement. As one of the principal companies making turret clocks in the 19^th century, Smiths produce thousands of clocks that were installed in churches, town halls, hospitals and the like. Their turret clocks are a familiar sight through the UK and in many countries of the past British Empire. Their distinctive sycamore like design of the hour hands identifies the Smith parentage and echoes their roots in the Whitehurst dynasty.

But a turret clock is a lot more than cast iron and brass and this book by Maxwell Craven wisely makes no attempt to address the hardware. There are no pictures of clock movements, escapements, pendulums or catalogue pages. Instead, the book is all about the company, the family and the staff who worked at the benches to make it all happen. The company activities are mirrored by the need for public clocks to reflect the social systems into which a clock is sold. This book is all about people and if readers approach it with that in mind they will not be disappointed.........for me the best parts are the tales and anecdotes of the staff. The price has got to be very reasonable for this 250 plus pages book when compared with most horological books produced today.’

Historic Pierhead Clock back in Cardiff...

The historic Pierhead clock that stood in Cardiff docks for nearly 80 years was unveiled on Tuesday November 8^th, 2011, after being restored to its former glory by world renowned clockmakers, Smith of Derby. A special parade was held to mark the unveiling of the Pierhead Clock, which returned to Cardiff after an absence of nearly 40 years, including a Royal British Legion marching band.

The restoration of the 114-year-old clock was a special moment for the firm’s engineers as the original was made by Potts of Leeds, which is owned by Smith of Derby, when installed in the Welsh capital’s Pierhead building in 1897.

It was auctioned off by British Rail in 1973 and then sold on to an American collector, Alan Heldman, three years later. In 2004 he decided that the mechanism should be returned from Alabama to Cardiff, and having been restored, its unveiling will mark the completion of major city centre improvements in Cardiff.

Eric Beardow, Senior Clockmaker at Smith of Derby, said the restoration work included replacing lost parts and making a completely new strike second wheel, part of the gear structure which allows the bell to be struck, which engineers were able to do using original Potts parts. The clock was then repainted in traditional Potts livery of burgundy and black. “We found an old photograph showing a clock of a similar vintage which allowed us to repaint this one in traditional Potts colours,” he added.

New dials, a bell, hammer, gears and dialworks have also been used, as well as the inclusion of the latest technology in a pendulum regulator to help preserve accuracy, and an automatic winding system.

Bob Betts, Managing Director of Smith of Derby, said: “The challenge was how to take an antique clock and adhere to all the regulations surrounding antiques whilst creating an iconic clock for the people of Cardiff. There is a great story and history to the clock and, being one of our own originally, to see it up and running again is something everyone at Smith of Derby is very proud of."

A piece of art housing the clock mechanism has been created by the artist Marianne Forrest, and the clock will be surrounded by a metallic question mark, providing information about the history of the clock and the docks area. It also houses three replica monkeys, which will strike hourly chimes, which have local historical significance. The clock will stand in the spot where, in the late 18th Century, ships would have operated before Cardiff Docks were built. Cardiff Council Leader, Councillor Rodney Berman, described the new clock as “a really impressive piece of public art”. Pat Thompson, Commercial Development Manager for Cardiff City Council said to Bob Betts. “Thanks for all your efforts and those of your team, not forgetting Marianne. It is a credit to your company and will be a key meeting point for the people of Cardiff.”

Swiss Glockenspiel

A Derby clockmaker has helped bring a famous Swiss landmark back to London's Leicester Square.

The Swiss Glockenspiel has returned to the capital for the first time since being removed when the Swiss Centre was demolished in 2008.

The redesigned musical clock, featuring 27 bells and 11 moving Swiss figures, was rebuilt by Smith of Derby in collaboration with Swiss artists.

It is being officially inaugurated at a ceremony later.

Good Times Ahead for Belper Town FC

Belper Town Football Club has acquired a new clock at their Christchurch Meadow ground thanks to world renowned local clockmaker, Smith of Derby.

Funding for the new clock came from the Belper Town FC Operations Committee, the prime matchday fundraisers for the club.

The clock was fitted to the ‘Reg Walker’ Stand by Smith of Derby engineer, Kevin Allen, aided by young son Tom.

Kevin is also a member of the Club's Operations Committee and he designed and built the unique timepiece. The installation work was also undertaken by Belper Town FC Director, Andy Carter, of local Belper electrical company, A Carter Electrical Ltd.

Saudi Arabia Trade Mission

Smith of Derby joined five other East Midlands businesses on a UKTI Trade Mission to Saudi Arabia on 3^rd June 2011, to spend time in Riyadh and Jeddah. The delegation was hosted by the UK Trade and Investment at the British Embassy in Riyadh and the Consul General in Jeddah, who gave them a series of useful introductions to Saudi businesses and contacts within the country.

Smith of Derby has been making clocks for over 150 years and is no stranger in the Middle East; the company recently crafted the world’s first luxury Islamic Prayer Clock, which was launched in Abu Dhabi in May this year. They also produced a prestigious gift clock to commemorate this trip to Saudi Arabia.

“We were very happy to be part of the Trade Mission. We brought over our 24 carat gold plate Prayer Clock which cleverly displays local time and prayer times, and we had a number of promising enquiries. The UKTI has been very supportive of our visits and the launch of the clock.”

Smith of Derby, the world’s leading clockmaker, is now showcasing a number of its luxury clocks in Dubai’s renowned Arte Vivo showroom.

This is an exciting opportunity to see the company’s luxury clocks in a contextual and permanent setting, surrounded by opulent lighting and furniture.

Arte Vivo provides systematic interior design services, including the design and manufacture of furniture to the contract hospitality and private residence sectors.

Having exhibited several times in the region at trade fairs and private viewings, this is the first time Smith of Derby clocks will be available to view in Dubai on a permanent basis.

Initially, to explore the quality and craftsmanship of these clocks, the company’s Whitehurst mantel clock is on display, part of its luxury Whitehurst Clocks range, as well as the exclusive Islamic Prayer Clock and a 100 year-old traditional clock movement, which has proved so popular with exhibition-goers.
