The restoration of the clock and dials at the Woolwich Arsenal site in London proved to be a considerable challenge.
The Woolwich Arsenal dates back to 1671, but was eventually closed in the 1990s. The restoration started in 2008 when, in partnership with English Heritage and the architects, we removed the clock to our Derby works for repairs, restoration and storage until the other building work was near to completion. As ever, we kept careful records of the original installation and this was to prove invaluable.
Unfortunately, as part of the redevelopment, a digger hit part of the archway bringing down the whole rear and roof structure including the clock turret. However, our survey records came to the rescue, allowing the architects and English Heritage to create an accurate reconstruction.
