Echoes Feature Town Clock
Ebbw Vale , Wales.
World-renowned artist Marianne Forrest chose Smith of Derby to build a commission in the heart of the Welsh town of Ebbw Vale.
This dramatic feature public clock is named Echoes and is a cantilevered arch that ends with a double faced clock. It's design captures the spirit of the town with a number of its integral design features and materials that are associated with the former steelworks and coal industry of the locality. Local people's words have been captured and incorporated in the structure of the arc supporting the clock face.
The original name for Ebbw Vale – Glyn Ebbw, translates to mean ‘Valley of the Wild Horse’ and the graceful arc within the design captures the natural lines of a horse’s neck to maintain the association of a time when horses roamed wild in the town.
Polished stainless steel spheres adorn the pavement around the clock, bringing the sky down to earth.
